CALÇADAS GRANDE
Calçadas Grande (also known as Portuguese street mosaics) date back to about 4,000 BC and were discovered in the ancient city of Babylon. Made of sun-dried mud, they were literally as hard as stone.
The stones are also known as kinderkopjes in the Netherlands. Today, the black and white stones form beautiful street mosaics throughout Portugal. Since the laying (which is done by hand) is very labor intensive, this art form is being used less and less.
